Large & Small Business Questions & AnswersQ: What is the difference between a Due Diligence Investigation and a Background Investigation?
A: Background investigations and Due Diligence Investigations are a proven effective way to know who you are really dealing with. People in your life and associates in business will tell you all that they want you to know and believe about them. Unfortunately, they dont tell you all things you NEED to know. You should first know that there are varying degrees of background investigations. Just how far you need to go and how much you should spend depends on your needs and level of threat.
For example, a general background investigation primarily consists of database searches only. These type searches are useful in verifying information such as name, date of birth, current and last known addresses. They may also include alias names, maiden names, married names, people they have lived with in the past, people associated with them, corporate affiliations and criminal convictions depending on the state and its laws. General database searches are deemed reliable to a point, however, there are many factors to be considered depending on your need and threat level. Databases are only as good as the information that has been entered. This means that there may be incorrect information entered or that additional information on the subject of the investigation may not have been entered into the state, county or paid database, so it is not as thorough or complete as a more in depth, verified background or due diligence investigation. Depending on your need and the scope of work required, HPI can conduct these general investigations for between $100.00 and $300.00 and usually within 24 hours. You should not rely on the databases found on the internet offering super cheap background investigations. HPI utilizes paid, subscribed databases that are much more reliable and are not available to the general public. A complete, detailed Background investigation, also known as a Due Diligence Investigation, is a more in depth investigation that not only utilizes HPI paid databases, but also includes a physical search of all records found throughout the United States. Every reasonable effort is made to insure that no information is missed. An HPI associate will actually pull all records found through database research, as well as verify the information for accuracy and search for additional records that the databases may have missed. Depending on our clients need to know and threat level, this investigation may also include field interviews with former employers, business and personal associates, as well as law enforcement agencies. Criminal convictions found will be documented by certified records for court admissibility and our clients will receive a professional, easy to read, detailed written report along with copies of all records found. This investigation usually takes between 10-15 working days and the average costs range between $1500.00 - $2000.00. A Due Diligence investigation is highly recommended before entering into any business relationship where substantial investments are at risk. HPI Due Diligence Investigations have saved our clients millions of dollars by supplying them with the information they need to avoid risky investments and business decisions. An HPI associate will assist you in determining the scope of work your situation needs and set a budget for the investigation before initiating the assignment.
